The People Who Put Guwahati on the River

The story

A river this size deserved better evenings

The Brahmaputra runs a kilometre wide through Guwahati, and for most of the city's history the only way onto it after work was a ferry. The Alfresco name has been changing that since 1998 — pioneering river cruising on the Brahmaputra when nobody else believed an evening on this water could be a destination in itself.

In 2009 came the boat that proved the idea for good: Alfresco Grand, still the largest and most premium cruise vessel on the river — three decks, a dining hall, a bar, and room for 150 guests to watch the sunset the way it's meant to be watched. The fleet grew around her: S B Serene for private parties, S B Agam for evenings that belong to two people.

Six lakh guests later, the family behind Alfresco still runs it the same way — a working river company from Guwahati, on the water every single evening, monsoon included.

How we host

The details we refuse to outsource

Every plate served on board comes from our own kitchens, cooked fresh that day — it's why catering is the one thing charter hosts can't bring themselves. The culture on deck is the real thing too: Sattriya and Gayan Bayan from Assam's classical tradition, Bihu danced the way it's danced at home, live singers who know the river's moods.

And underneath the golden hour runs a professional operation: captains licensed as second-class masters, third-party surveys and safety drills, life jackets and railed decks, women across the front office and service crew. Six lakh guests took these evenings with us; the next one gets the same care.

Meet the river yourself. The daily cruises sail every evening — golden hour from ₹700, or the all-inclusive dinner cruise.
